And it’s such a big universe, really, that I can do any kind of story in it, so I said “Well, I’ll just take advantage of the construction I’ve already done and kind of build a little addition off in this direction”. And even before I started writing Ancillary Justice I had written a little bit of short fiction set in that universe, and so then I would build up more things, and so I spent so much time building that it seemed silly to just leave all of that behind. Were you always planning to go back to that same world, but to tell different stories – how did this one came to be?Īnn Leckie: I absolutely always intended to come back to that universe because I spent so much time building it. In Provenance, you see a different set of people with a different set of traditions and a different use of language.

It’s set far away from that story although you can still feel the repercussions of what’s happening with the artificial intelligence and with the Empire. Before reading it I didn’t realize that it was actually set in the same world as the Ancillary books.
